Stu Cook SC5

Mike Lull SC5

From Stu Cook: “I’ve been a Precision bass player since 1965. Over the next 50+ years I have experimented with other instruments. In early 2010 I acquired Mike Lull #838, a used PJ5, and I was immediately hooked. In the Summer of 2010 Mike built me a monster T5 but being a P bass guy, I never could adjust to the body shape. However, the T Bird pickups completely blew me away. They sounded huge, but my PJ5 felt like home.

Jump ahead to 2019 and I asked Mike to build another custom bass. As much as I’d always liked the shape of the Jazz Bass, the butt (lower rear bout) felt too big, and I hated the controls location.

Then came the lightbulb moment - the Lull M4V passive body is about 20% smaller than the Vintage Jazz body - and the concept came together. I asked Mike to build a 35” JT5 on the smaller M4V body, a 5 string ‘mini’ Jazz with T Bird pickups and a Tele style pickguard.”

“All three of my Lulls feel the same when played - terrific, so transitioning to my Signature Model was a non-event. The bass weighs slightly under 9 pounds and is well balanced. My biggest surprise was how huge this bass sounds, even bigger than my T5.

Mike’s decision to designate this design as the Stu Cook Signature Model is a huge honor - the cherry on top of a great build.
